Today in Short: Migrant crisis in Poland‘s border with Belarus

What’s going on in the border between Poland and Belarus? Well, long story short, it’s a Geopolitical crisis in which people in need are caught in the middle. Since August, thousands of migrants, most of them fleeing from the wars in Syria, Yemen and the dire situation in Iraq have amassed in Belarus’s border with Poland, attempting to cross to the European Union.

Leaders in Brussels saw this as a power move by Belarus’s president Alexander Lukashenko in response to the sanctions the European Union has imposed in the country following his violent crackdown on dissent and opposition politicians who challenged his victory in the presidential elections last year.

So, fast-forward to now, November 2021. Hundreds of migrants keep arriving to the border and the situation is increasingly tense. To make matters worse, journalists are facing increasing challenges in documenting what’s going on. And this is what we are going to talk Today, in short. Today in Short: End Impunity Day

In at least nine out of ten cases where journalists are murdered, the killers go unpunished. All over the world, criminals and authoritarian forces are silencing independent media with violence, while facing virtually no consequences, which in turn triggers more attacks and forces critical journalists to censor themselves. Ultimately, this impunity aims to silence journalists and prevent information from reaching the public.

(Mustafa Kuleli) Nitelikli gazeteciliğin ekonomik sürdürülebilirliği ve otoriter rejimlerde medya

Özgür Sohbetler'in yirminci bölümünde gazeteci Cansu Çamlıbel, Türkiye Gazeteciler Sendikası (TGS) Genel Sekreteri Mustafa Kuleli ile bağımsız ve kaliteli gazetecilik için finansmanın önemini ve otoriter rejimler altındaki gazetecilerin dayanışmasının basın özgürlüğü mücadelesine olan etkisi üzerine konuştu.

Eylül ayında gerçekleşen IPI 2021 Dünya Kongresi'nde de ele alınan "gazeteciliğin finansmanı" konusunda, okuyucuya dayalı olan bütün modellerde bir ikna problemi olduğundan bahseden Kuleli, içerikten tatmin olmadıkça okuyucunun habere para vermek istemediğini, bu durumda da bağımsız medyanın nitelikli gazetecileri istihdam edemediğini belirtti.

Kuleli, “Birçok farklı haber kaynağına, belli bir miktar vererek bir platform üzerinden erişebilmeliyim. Bizim Türkiye’de de, küresel ölçekte de gazeteciliğin Netflix’ine ihtiyacımız var,” dedi.

Today in Short: Thailand‘s crackdown on the pro-democracy movement

Thailand was one of the 18 countries that introduced measures to control so-called ‘fake news’ last year during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the country has seen massive pro-democracy protests, which have challenged the role of the country’s monarchy – previously a taboo topic. Authorities have resorted to violence to end the protests and journalists and news outlets have also also caught up in the crackdown. The government also recently revived its harsh lese majeste laws, which punish criticism of the royal family.

Today in Short: Media Capture in the EU

We often talk about populism and the danger it represents to our freedoms and, in particular, to media freedom. Today in Short we look at the phenomenon of media capture inside the EU. The Hungary of Viktor Orbán has led the way, abusing the power of the state to co-opt the media market and corner independent news outlets. However, this phenomenon is not unique to Hungary – indeed, the so-called “Orbán model” is spreading throughout Central Europe.

Today in Short: Russia‘s ”foreign agent” law stifles critical reporting

United Russia, the party of President Vladimir Putin, claimed victory in Russia’s parliamentary elections this week – while the opposition maintains the results were based on fraud. Concerns about fairness were rampant already in the lead-up to the vote, with opposition politicians largely barred from running and, crucially, heavy restrictions on independent news media. In particular, Russia’s so-called “foreign agent” law has made it significantly more difficult for independent Russian media to operate.

IPI contributor Anne ter Rele interviews Galina Timchenko, the Editor-in-Chief of Meduza, a critical Russian-language news outlet labelled as a foreign agent earlier this year. What are the consequences of this law? And most importantly, how can Meduza still do its job?

The Press Freedom Files: Will spying on journalists be the ‘new normal’?

What the journalistic community has long suspected – that surveillance of reportersis much more widespread than could be proven – became reality when Forbidden Stories and 16 other international news organisations released The Pegasus Project.  Based on leaked information, the story revealed that over 180 journalists were listed as suspected targets of phone hacking using Pegasus, a spyware for governments whose claimed purpose is to monitor those suspected of serious crime and terrorist activity.

In our latest podcast episode, IPI Head of Digital Media and Innovation Javier Luque speaks with Marton Gergely, editor-in-chief of the independent weekly HVG in Hungary, and Siddharth Varadarajan, editor-in-chief of India’s The Wire, on the impact of these revelations on the journalistic community.

The Press Freedom Files: Belgian film #FatUglySlut zeroes in on online abuse against women

Directed by Florence Hainaut and Myriam Leroy, prominent journalists in Belgium, the film #FatUglySlut portrays the stories of several women, from different backgrounds, ages and origins, that dealt sexist abuse and violent threats online. The twist is that both Hainaut and Leroy have themselves been at the bull’s eye of recurrent misogynistic campaigns online.

IPI Head of Digital Communications Javier Luque interviews both directors in this new episode of The Press Freedom Files dedicated to the phenomenon of online harassment against journalists.
